Ludwig Amadeus of Savoy, Duke of Abruzzo, is one of the great representatives of the generation of explorers who expanded the spectrum of the world's beauty, along with men like Nansen, TE Lawrence, and Mummery.

The Duke of Abruzzo, son of Amadeo I of Savoy, King of Spain for a brief period, had an intense life where adventure and ideals were always present.

In 1909, he attempted the world's second-highest mountain, K2. They failed to reach the summit, but the adventure was the most significant exploration effort ever undertaken in the Karakoram, breaking an altitude record that stood until Mallory's expeditions to Everest in the 1920s.

As Sebastián Álvaro states in his interesting text about the Duke that completes this novel, for this great mountaineer and explorer, "...nothing will be an obstacle that cannot be overcome with a combination of intelligence, work, and audacity. Sea and mountains, polar regions and tropical lands, exploration, science, and mountaineering—everything will fit within the organized mind of Luis de Saboya."
