The Nepalese climber Nirmal Purja achieved, on January 16, 2021, the first winter ascent of the only eight thousand that until then had not been climbed in the coldest season: K2. The world record for climbing those fourteen summits had stood for around eight years. So when Nims announced that he intended to climb all of them in less than seven months, people scoffed. They told him he was crazy, even though he had already tested his great mountaineering abilities on Himalayan peaks as severe as Everest and Dhaulagiri.
